iPad orchestra

There are many amazing uses for an iPad. Among the device's potentially revolutionary applications, as I wrote back in April, are those related to making music. As several musicians told me, having a 9.7-inch multi-touch screen attached to a fast computer with an audio output opens up a crazy universe of possibilities. Case in point: this video, in which an "iPad Orchestra" performs "Sweet Dream," a piece written by Ilya Plavunov, on an app called Seline HD while wearing T-shirts indicating which "real" instrument's part each musician is playing.
Digital Music News frowned on this video, calling the iPad an instrument of "mass orchestral destruction," and the performance "a geeky iPad frolic." TechCrunch wasn't too stoked on it, either. And those writers may have a point -- watching a bunch of people tap an iPad is nothing like watching a capable chamber ensemble or a full orchestra perform. Having the iPad simply replicate the part of a real instrument -- cheeky T-shirts or no -- is about the most conventional use of it imaginable. But iPad music-making is in its infancy. If this video doesn't show what the iPad may eventually be capable of musically, it at least gives us a starting point.

panoptICONS

‘panoptICONS’ addresses the fact that you are constantly being watched by surveillance cameras in city centres. The surveillance camera seems to have become a real pest that feeds on our privacy. To represent this, camera birds - city birds with cameras instead of heads - were placed throughout the city centre of Utrecht where they feed on our presence. In addition, a camera bird in captivity was displayed to show the feeding process and to make the everyday breach of our privacy more personal and tangible.

panoptICONS is a project by Thomas voor 't Hekke and Bas van Oerle who work together by the name of 'Helden'.

The new Slanted (#11)

The Revolution won’t be set in Garamond – “Slanted #11 – Monospace, Typewriter” comes in revised structure and layout.
Projects are confronted with each other, magazine sections overlap. The changes reflect our attitude towards contemporary
editorial design in analogue and digital times. This “new order” is a homage to the visual and to design. Orientation,
information and sections still have their own right and place within the magazine‘s structure, but the changing of perspectives,
the relations and associations are definitely not an expression by the medium of information, rather of openness
and examination. It‘s a concept that doesn’t come under the hegemony of function, a feast of the visual.
With great pleasure we present the work of studio Moiré (Zurich/CH), the photographic essays “Images from the Dark
Side” by Martin Miller (Baltimore/USA) and “A Crude World” by Paolo Woods (Paris/FR) as well as contemporary typefaces,
illustrations and projects related to monospace and typewriters. Type essays by Alexander Negrelli (Berlin/DE), Rieke
Harmsen (Munich/DE) and Horst Wöhrle (Esslingen/DE) examine the aesthetics, history and connotations of typewriter
fonts, interviews with Yves Peters (Sint-Denijs-Westrem/BE), Richard Kegler (Buffalo/USA), Georg Seifert (Berlin/DE) as
well as a Tokyo report by Ian Lynam (Tokyo/JP) and a musical travelogue by DJ Frank Wiedemann (âme / INNERVISIONS,
Berlin/DE) round up the stuff to read.

Its Nice Thats number 4 issue is coming up!

From our magazine colleagues Will and Alex. Alex send me this message: "The lineup is incredibly exciting and we have interviews with Nick Knight, Neville Brody, Miranda July, Trokia, RBG6, Noma Bar and Bompas & Parr, features by Sara De Bondt, Adam Buxton, Adrian Shaughnessy, Jez Burrows, Mike Lemanski, Peter Nencini and Micah Lidberg as well as tons of work from the likes of Michael Landy, Rui Teneiro, Peter Grundy and more.

Also, very excitingly, every order placed before midnight on September 30th (the day before the official release) will receive a free screenprint by James Jarvis, commissioned especially for the issue. The print will be two colour, with a spot UV gloss, making it that little bit extra special and will come unfolded at 185 x 245mm."

And looking at the previous issues this one has got to be great!

Shadow Art

Shadow art is a unique form of sculptural art where the 2D shadows cast by a 3D sculpture are essential for the artistic effect. We introduce computational tools for the creation of shadow art and propose a design process where the user can directly specify the desired shadows by providing a set of binary images and corresponding projection information. Since multiple shadow images often contradict each other, we present a geometric optimization that computes a 3D shadow volume whose shadows best approximate the provided input images. Our analysis shows that this optimization is essential for obtaining physically realizable 3D sculptures. The resulting shadow volume can then be modified with a set of interactive editing tools that automatically respect the often intricate shadow constraints. We demonstrate the potential of our system with a number of complex 3D shadow art sculptures that go beyond what is seen in contemporary art pieces.

Crowdsourcet TV

Bron:
http://www.bright.nl/film-it-yourself-crowdsourcet-tv

SMSlingshot

by VR/Urban:

"
The Concept

Because of the increased commercial interest of paving public space with digital advertising screens the need for an accessibel intervention devices seemed obvious and necessary. The wish and habit to comment (tag) the surrounding world is also an ancient and still vivant phenomena we try to preserve. Our concept of VR/Urban aims for claiming back urban space and and give the inhabitants a tool for occupiing urban screens. People shall not
only remain as a passive audience, they must obtain the
privilege and beside that the right tools to create their
own multimedia content in the streets. The more and more
mushrooming media facades, LED supplied walls and huge
projections are interesting and worthy technical innovations
for the people, but in contrast to the old fashioned posters
in the streets, it is nearly impossible to create own content for these facades or even hang up your digital video.

The SMSlingshot is an autonom working device, equipped with an ultra-high frequency radio, hacked arduino board, laser and batteries. Text messages can be typed on a phone-sized wooden keypad which is integrated in the also wooden slingshot. After the message is finished, the user can aim on a media facade and send/shoot the message straight to the targeted point. It will then appear as a colored splash with the message written within. The text message will also be real-time twittered - just in case."
